Judas Priest - Nostradamus

Edward Box gives us the most complete review that will find on the new Judas Priest epic - Nostradamus!

It’s strange to think the effect that one record can have on your life. When Judas Priest reunited with Rob Halford to record the album Angel of Retribution, little did I know that it would inspire me to start a band.

Kings X - XV

‘XV’ is the latest album from one-time saviours of metal, Kings X. The Houston based trio arrived fully formed in 1988 with a combination of heaviness, groove and gorgeous Beatles-esque harmony laden vocals that - at the time - was genuinely innovative.

Kiko Loureiro Interview at The Guitar Institute

Kiko Loureiro

Brazilian Kiko Loureiro recently played a Masterclass at London's The Institute of Contemporary Music, and the Guitar Institute's master of ‘world guitar' Tolis Zavaliaris was on hand on 11th March 2008 to ask a few pertinent questions to this exciting new guitar star. Kiko is a genuinely fresh new addition to the ranks of virtuoso metal based guitarists, bringing an eclectic mix of influences that reflect his South American heritage - and these combined with a world class command of the modern rock guitar idiom results in a genuinely cutting edge axeman.

Bullet For My Valentine – Scream Aim Fire

The long awaited follow-up to the Welsh quartet’s debut ‘The Poison’, is unashamed old school metal with nu-school production. Already flying high in the US Billboard chart, Bullet have well and truly arrived and are the possible successors to the mighty Iron Maiden.

Harmonic Minor Scale and Phrygian Dominant Mode

One of the most popular scales in the metal genre is the Harmonic Minor Scale but a common misconception is that this scale is used purley from its root note. However, it is more likely that you will find that most chordal backings for this scale centre around its 5th degree. This shift in the tonal centre results in it becoming a mode of the Harmonic Minor and this is known as the Phrygian Dominant Mode.

Let's look at the notes in an A Natural Minor Scale:

Sebastian Bach - Angel Down

God bless Sebastian Bach for sticking at it and carrying the ‘Kick Ass Heavy Rockin Torch’ onwards and upwards. If only he and Skid Row could see eye to eye, then both would still be a far bigger deal.

Last Day in Paradise - Alex Skolnick Trio

Last Day in Paradise

A few years ago I bought the first Alex Skolnick trio album ‘Goodbye to Romance’ not knowing what to expect. I was suitably impressed by the Jazz take on metal songs from Kiss, Sabbath, Aerosmith and Scorpions. They were good imaginative and well composed arrangements and of course featured the very excellent and tasteful guitar noodling of mr Skolnick. The next album, ‘Transformation’ featured a few originals alongside some Judas Priest, Dio and Deep Purple classics.
