Michael Romeo Interview – A Perfect Symphony Part One: 1970's to 2000.

Back in the mid 1990's Symphony X surfaced from the fertile breeding ground for virtuoso rock and shred/metal guitarists that is New Jersey, USA. One of those very rare bands whose signature sound and approach was pretty much fully formed from day one, Symphony X emerged with a stunning blend of precision metal riffing, soaring melodies and show stopping solo passages from guitarist Michael Romeo and keyboardist Mike Pinella that provided the previously unchallenged Dream Theater with a viable contender for the throne of the ultimate prog metal band.

Phil Hilborne Interview: The Guv'nor Part One

Phil Hilborne Live

When we sat down and conceived Alloutguitar.com back in 2005, I had a wish list of players that I really wanted to feature. Phil Hilborne was right at the top: for anyone learning to play rock guitar growing up in the 80's and early 90's in the UK, Phil was pretty much omnipresent. As music editor of Guitarist magazine, and latterly co-founder and Music and CD Editor of Guitar Techniques, Phil influenced and taught a whole generation how to play - and play properly....

Harmonic Minor Scale and Phrygian Dominant Mode

One of the most popular scales in the metal genre is the Harmonic Minor Scale but a common misconception is that this scale is used purley from its root note. However, it is more likely that you will find that most chordal backings for this scale centre around its 5th degree. This shift in the tonal centre results in it becoming a mode of the Harmonic Minor and this is known as the Phrygian Dominant Mode.

Let's look at the notes in an A Natural Minor Scale:

The Neo-Classical King: YNGWIE J MALMSTEEN!

Today's Elevenses Throws Eleven Quick Questions At 'The Neo-Classical King' Yngwie J. Malmsteen!

Yngwie J. Malmsteen is one of rock's premiere virtuoso guitarists. His grammy nominated 1984 debut solo album, 'Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force', established seemingly overnight the musical genre now referred to as 'neo-classical' rock. Yngwie is a legend in both style and technique, has released 16 solo studio albums and toured the world many times over.

Outworld - Outworld

I know it’s been a while since Outworld’s self-titled debut, but having listened to it a lot recently and baring in mind that a band of this calibre with such high critical praise are without a record deal, I thought that a review won’t do any harm.

Mario Parga - Entranced

Mario Parga is a UK guitarist of Spanish extraction who I first encountered back in the late 80's at one of the very early Guitarist shows, demoing for Ibanez if memory serves me correctly. He was one of the first UK based guitarists who really had those exotic (at that time) 'shred' techniques really down - and had some genuine star quality to boot.
