The title of John McLaughlin’s latest CD offering “Floating Point” describes that unique moment when all the musicians in the band are in the groove, when everything gels, when all are playing as one.
The outstanding musicianship, composition and improvisation to be found on this, John’s 40th recording as a band leader or co-leader, all go to reinforce his standing as one of the truly great musicians of the last 50 years.
His contribution to music is unquestionable, whether it be through his work with Miles Davis, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Carlos Santana, Shakti or any of the many other projects he’s been involved with. One of the finest guitarists there has ever been, McLaughlin’s compositions often take repeated listening in order to extract maximum aural satisfaction, but the time is always well spent.
“Floating Point” was recorded in India and features several of the best Indian musicians in the world together with some top notch Western players.
Overview!
Opening the CD is “Abbaji”, which typifies the high-energy playing and improvisational virtuosity that John and his musical cohorts create on this new offering. it features a blend of flute-like guitar synth and soprano sax, all underpinned by some really dynamic drumming.
“Raju,” features a guitar duet between Hindustani slide guitar (Debashish Bhattacharya) and John’s guitar synth. The main riff is very “Layla-esque”, with the rhythm section laying down a mesmerising undercurrent over which the two guitars and bass each add creative solos.
Next up is the dreamy, laid-back groove of “Maharina” containing a tasty keyboard solo from Louiz Banks. John’s flute-sounding guitar synth adds to the lush quality of this piece.
“Off The One” features John in awesome form on this funky offering, with some quite magnificent soloing. Bamboo flautist Shashank also delivers a masterful display of his instrument, while bassist Hadrien Feraud and his colleagues Ranjit Barot (drums) and Sivamani (percussion) drive the song with a sizzling, rhythmic undercurrent.
“The Voice” highlights vocalist Shankar Mahadevan, who delivers a very emotive contribution to this delicious mid-tempo number. It really is quite soul-stirring.
“Inside Out” rumbles along at a frenetic pace, the rhythm section really brewing up a percussive storm over which John adds some blistering soloing. Altogether a glorious groove.
The jaunty “14U” contains some dazzling solos from Naveen’s bamboo flute, John’s flute-like guitar synth and Hadrien Feraud’s bubbling bass – a beautifully uplifting piece that you don’t want to end.
The closing track “Five Peace Band” lays down a funky rhythm over which McLaughlin plays dual lead with electric zitar player Niladri Kumar. There follow some exuberant solos which all exude a mood of fun and enjoyment. You can almost visualise the musicians smiling as they create this wonderful melting pot of east-meets- west jazz fusion.
Conclusion
This latest offering from John McLaughlin is a feast for fusion-lovers everywhere. It delivers not only in terms of the superb musicianship present on the CD, but also for its compositional quality and mesmerising improvisation. It really is a joyful, uplifting experience and an essential purchase. Go buy it!
